Williamina Fleming was a Scottish astronomer.

She was born on May 15th in 1857 and she died on May 21st in 1911 in Dundee.

She was a teacher when she married Orr Fleming, a banker. They moved to Boston in the USA, but Orr left Williamina and their child.

In order to earn money, Williamina got a job as a maid in the home of Professor Edward Charles Pickering at the University of Harvard College Observatory.

Williamina made herself useful at the observatory and got more and more responsibilities.

But the greatest responsibility was to classify stars. In nine years, she classified more than 10,000 stars for the Henry Draper Catalogue.

She was the first American woman to enter the Royal Astronomical Society of London
